Khmer: បេង , pronounced BENG, (Afzelia Xylocarpa) is a large, well known and highly revered, critically endangered tree with attractive and highly valuable wood. The highly figured lumber is often sold as Afzelia Xylay. The wood is heavy, hard, very durable (tests have shown a durability under exposure of about 10 years in tropical conditions)
Due to the intense pressure on the tree, large specimens are hard to find. The tree is highly valued for its attractive timber, and has been widely exploited from the wild in the past. It is only available in small quantities nowadays due to the scarcity of the trees, and thus fetches very high prices. A penstock blank (a small piece the size of a pen) is $10. Here is an example of a small board selling for $299.
